Burton E. Wommer, age 89 of 605 S. Pine St, Ishpeming, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 1, 2010 at his home under the loving care of his family and UP Home Health & Hospice. Burton was born September 25, 1921 in Ishpeming to George & Margaret (Wolz) Wommer. Burt graduated from Ishpeming High School and served in the United States Army during World War II. His military unit served in the European Campaign and guarded Nazi war criminals at the end of the war as they awaited trial at Nuremberg. Burt worked for Narotozky Motors prior to working for Cleveland Cliffs where he worked many years retiring as a Boss from the Empire Mine. Burt was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society where he was a Past President. Burt enjoyed the outdoors: hunting, fishing, and spending time at camp on Fish Lake with family and friends.
