Valley Center - Zackula, Walter "Bud", 85, retired Physical Education Teacher, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Larksfield Place in Wichita, following a long illness.

He was born in Wichita, Kansas to Michael Zackula and Daisy Pansy (Maness) Zackula. During World War II, he served in the Navy in the Pacific theatre, and from 1952 to 1991 was a teacher and administrator in the Kansas City, Missouri Public Schools.

An avid golfer and outdoorsman, he enjoyed many sports, floating on Missouri rivers and camping across western U.S. and Canada, especially with family. He also spent many hours coaching his children and grandchildren in their sports and other endeavors.

Walt is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Spencer of Valley Center; children, Susan (James) Gamble of St. Louis, Missouri, Sharon Zackula of McLean, Virginia, Shirley Shipers of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Kris (Carla) Zackula of Richmond, Missouri, Stacy (Michael) Matthews of Lee's Summit, Missouri; grandchildren, Kristiana (Chad) Musselman and Jeremy Zackula of Richmond, Missouri, Corena (Phillip) Larimer of San Francisco, California, Genevieve (Nader) Nassif of New York, New York, Marjorie (Jon) Ibarra and Luke Shipers of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Christopher Matthews and Ryan Matthews of Lee's Summit, Missouri; great grandchildren, Kady Musselman, Kody Musselman, Liliana Ibarra, Catalina Ibarra, and Finn Larimer, and through Mary Spencer, extended family of an additional 5 children, 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; brothers, Milan Zackula of Wichita, Roger (Sue) Zackula of Wichita, Jon (Voncele) Zackula of Terra Bella, Califorina.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy (Myrtle) Zackula; grandson William H. Lash IV, and great-granddaughter Sophia Ibarra; parents; brothers, Wallace "Roy", Steve, Gail "Red", and Joseph Zackula; and sister Irene Fay.

Services will be held on Monday, July 11, at 10 a.m. at the Valley Center Christian Church, 1801 E. Fifth, Valley Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Autism Speaks, 5455 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 2250, Los Angeles, CA, 90036, in memory of William H, Lash IV, or the Presbyterian Ear Institute, 415 Cedar Street SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106, in honor of Liliana Ibarra. Baker Funeral Home, Valley Center.
