Mrs. Esther Phoebe Aspelin Hogle, 72, died
Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1988, at a Topeka hospital.

Mrs. Hogle was a registered nurse and had
worked in several area hospitals as a nurse
and supervisor.

She opened the first pediatric nursing service
in Topeka in 1951 and was instructor and
supervisor. She also supervised the nursing
care of the acute polio patients during the
Kansas epidemic in the early 1950s. She
helped establish the first radio active isotope
diagnostic facility in Topeka and Kansas in
July 1951 at Stormont-Vail Hospital.

In 1955 she was named supervisor of Dallas
Visiting Nurses Association and later was
director of the association. She conducted
a month-long time and cost study on the
services and a year's pilot study for
establishing the Dallas Homemaker Service.

Mrs. Hogle in 1958 was named director of the
Dodge City Public School of Practical Nursing
and established the school by May 1958. She
was registered nurse in charge of patient
care and resident and patient pharmaceutical
needs and supplies at the Kansas Soldier's
Home in Fort Dodge in mid 1961.

She was named curriculum coordinator in
1964 for Asbury Hospital School of Nursing
at Salina and became director of the school
in 1966. In 1970 she established and directed
the hospital in-service education programs
for Asbury at Salina and Memorial Hospital
at Abilene.

Mrs. Hogle served 39 months in the Army
Nurse Corps during World War II including
service with the 88th Field Hospital, 10th
Army, on Okinawa. She also had worked
with Japanese prisoners of war on Okinawa
and with German prisoners in Trinidad,
Colo. She was discharged at the rank
of first lieutenant.

She was born Oct, 8, 1916, at Dwight,
the third of nine children of Albert and
Dagny Elizabeth Nicholson Aspelin. She
was graduated from Dwight Grade School
and later from Dwight High School in 1935.
She was graduated in 1942 with honors from
Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Topeka.
She graduated from Kansas State College
of Agriculture at Manhattan in 1949 with
a home economics degree.

She later took a year of graduate study in
nursing education with special emphasis in
the care of the child. (In Chicago) She
pursued further graduate study at Pittsburg
and Kansas State universities.

Mrs. Hogle was a member of Christ's
United Presbyterian Church in Phoenix, Ariz.
She also was a member of National, Kansas
and local Leagues for Nursing, American,
Kansas and district Nursing associations.
She was a member of Disabled American
Veterans, American Red Cross, Christ's
Hospital and Kansas State University Alumni
associations and Omicron Nu, national
honorary home economics sorority.

She was married to Edward E. Glaze of
Wichita Dec 27, 1957. They were divorced
in 1960. She was married to Wallace Hogle
of Phoenix in Las Vegas, Nev. Sept. 1, 1973.
They were divorced in September 1986.

Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Ruth Reid,
Dwight, Mrs. Helen Hill and Mrs. Rosalie
Myrtle, both of Wichita, Mrs. Norma Wendt,
Chicago, and Mrs. Georgia Kesler, Salt Lake
City; and two brothers, Edward Aspelin and
James Aspelin, both of Dwight.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in
Mulvane Chapel at the United Methodist
Home. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m.
Monday in Dwight Cemetery. Memorial
contributions may be made to Christ Hospital
Alumni Association and sent in care of
Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center,
1500 W. 10th, 66604, or the First
Presbyterian Church in Dwight, 66849.
Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.
