Maj Reginald William Sartorius

First Ashanti Expedition Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Sintra, Portugal, he served as a Captain in the 6th Bengal Cavalry, British Army attached to the West African Housas. During the attack at Abogoo, West Africa, Captain Sartorius was in command of a troop of 6th Bengal Cavalry. When his troop came under heavy enemy fire, he went forward to a mortally wounded Sergeant Major Housas non commissioned officer and carried him back to a safe position. For most prestigious award for gallantry, he was promoted Major and awarded the Victoria Cross invested by Queen Victoria at a Windsor Park Review on March 30, 1875. He went on to have a distinguished career taking part in the Indian Mutiny ( 1857-59 ), expedition to Bhutan (1864-65), actions in Afghanistan (1878-80) and retired a Major General. He died at age 66 in Cowes, Isle of Wight. His Father Sir George Rose Sartorius was an Admiral in the Royal Fleet and his younger brother Major General Euston H.
