Son of Eli Roy Hutchins 1891 MO and Lorana Jane Coble Hutchins 1896 MO. Sibling are: Alma Mae Swindle and Robert Dillard 1921 MO. Onas married Anna Catherine Nowachek on April 14, 1942, in Santa Monica, CA. Their children are: Martha Biggs, Robert, Ruthanne Holbert and Thomas Benton Onas (deceased). While Onas was in the Army serving in the Aleutian Islands, Ann moved to Carthage, MO to live with his parents. Onas and Ann lived in Carthage until 1987 when they retired in Eagle Rock, Mo near Table Rock Lake (they loved to fish). When their health began to fail, they moved to Axtell in 1998 to be near their daughter, Martha. Onas enjoyed telling of early childhood and living with his Coble grandparent and the hard times which they all shared, such as living on possum and sweet potatoes one winter.
Onas Benton Hutchins, 89, Axtell, Kan., died at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003 at the Nemaha Valley Hospital, Seneca, Kan.
Mr. Hutchins was born Nov. 10, 1913 in Greenfield, Mo., the son of Roy and Lora (Coble) Hutchins. His parents, a son, Thomas Hutchins, and a sister, Alma Swindle, preceded him in death.
He was a 1933 graduate of the Carthage High School and served in the U.S. Army in the Aleutian Islands during World War II from 1939 to 1945 as a height finder. He owned and operated Onas Hutchins Refrigeration Company in Carthage until his retirement in 1973. He then taught at the Joplin Vo-Tech Center until 1981. He was a member of the Carthage Lion's Club, and was a past president and district commander of VFW Post 2590 in Carthage.
He married Anna Nowachek on April 14, 1942 in Santa Monica, Calif. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Robert Hutchins, Slippery Rock, Penn.; two daughters, Martha Biggs, Axtell, Kan., Ruthanne Holbert, Manhattan Beach, Calif.; a brother, Robert Hutchins, Carthage; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Knell Mortuary Chapel, Carthage.
The body has been cremated. A private burial will be held at a later date in Park Cemetery.
