Maryland, USA
Death: Apr. 22, 1775

William Elder was the son of immigrant William Elder and Elizabeth Finch and was born on a farm called "Good Will" in Pr. Georges County. He first married Ann Wheeler and they had 5 children; William, Charles, Guy, Richard and Mary Elder. On her death he married Jacoba Clementina Livers and they had 7 more children; Elizabeth, Arnold, Anne,Thomas, Ignatius, Francis and Aloysius Elder. He traveled to Frederick County prior to 1736 and opened the Emmitsburg/ St. Anthony's area to settlement. Through his and his wives efforts the Catholic Faith is strong in that area. Mt. St. Marys College now occupies part of the area that the Elders had title. He and his wives are buried in the Elder Cemetery, a plot of land among the trees on what is now the College farm. A historical marker is on the road between St. Anthony's and Motter Station.
