William Elder, Jr
Birth: Sep. 5, 1729
Prince George's County
Maryland, USA
Death: 1804
Frederick County
Maryland, USA

William Elder Jr. wed Sabinah Weickum in 1752. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Weickum Jr. and Priscilla Tyler. William Elder Jr., the grandson of William Elder and Elizabeth Finch, the immigrant.

His father William Elder Senior moved to Prince George's County, Maryland in 1736, and built a home cleared acreage prior to moving his wife and young family into the wilderness. He had been one of the first white men to settle in this region. The land became Frederick County, Maryland in 1748. He had received a patent for land from Baron Lord Baltimore on August 27, 1732. The original parchment of this patent is in the Archives of Mount St. Mary's College near Emmitsburg, MD. He moved to the wilderness in part to escape the religious persecution of Catholics, in the early colonies. Catholics were not allowed to build churches or chapels. He held Mass in his home, that became known as The "Elder Station".

He engaged in the cultivation of tobacco in the of some of richest farmland in the colonies. The family compiled a large plantation and great wealth. Their farm in the shadow of the Catoctin Mountain near the Monocacy River. He named this area St. Mary's Mount. Know today as Mount Saint Mary's College and Seminary, the second oldest Catholic college and seminary in the United States was founded September 24, 1808 on what was originally William Elder's property. The church that William Elder established stands today over viewing the beautiful Elder plantation and the Elder Family Cemetery. This is but a brief outline of fascinating family history. His well was probated on May 23, 1776 (Will A:573)

William Elder Jr, settled on part of his father's plantation, spent the remainder of his life there. He was a prominent farmer and blacksmith. His will GM&RB # 1:64 is recorded in Frederick County, MD.
