Elva Jean Hammerstom, daughter of Edward and Sadie (Kuper) Hammerstrom, was born May 28, 1927, in Lennox, SD. She was raised in Lennox and her family then moved to Canton, SD where she graduated from Canton High School in 1946. Elva was the sixth person to be confirmed at the new East Side Lutheran Church. On March 4, 1950, she married Mearl Atwood in Canton. The couple then moved to Sioux Falls where the built their own home.

Elva worked at Package Delivery before staying at home to raise her family. Over the years she taught Sunday School and also ran her own day care from her home. She then worked for Dakota Casket Company and South Dakota Social Services where she cared for people.

Elva and Mearl enjoyed the many years they spent at their lake home on Lake Brandt. She was a very active bowler for 50 years and golfed in the Elmwood Ladies Golf League on Thursdays since 1981. She also enjoyed canning, fishing, playing cards, cooking, baking, sewing and crocheting. Above all Elva loved to spend time with her family.

Elva leaves behind her husband, Mearl Atwood; children, Gene (Julie) Atwood, Sioux Falls, Marlys (Dwight) Wood, Sioux Falls, and Herb (Deanna) Sundall, Kennebec, SD; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Duane (Ella Mae) Hammerstrom, San Antonio, TX; and sister-in-law, Alyce Hammerstrom, Canton, SD.
