Melcena was born on a farm east of Longford, Kansas. The youngest child of John and Emilie Emrich, her siblings were George of Longford, Kansas, Sherman who lived at Miltonvale, Kansas, Walter of Martin City, Missouri and Lena Yount who lived in Reno, Nevada.
She married William Anthony December 30, 1909 and they lived near Industry, Kansas most of their married life. They have four daughters: Lorena Minick of Buckeye, Kansas; Leona and Ruth of Abilene, then Industry after the death of their father; and Twila. Twila passed away August 10, 1914.

Leona married Tom Diehl August 23, 1958 on a farm south of Chapman, Dickenson County, Kansas. Ruth married Orval L. Flinn September 13, 1958. They made their home in Abeline, Kansas.
