James is a son of Lou Ann (Luana) Coble, born abt 1814, and George Jones, born abt 1812, both born in Kentucky. As a boy, he came with his large extended family to Dade County, Missouri about 1844.
James is a veteran of the Civil War. At the time of his enlistment in the Union forces he was 6'2" in height with a fair complexion, blue eyes and light colored hair. He was a farmer and would have been thirty years old. He was first enrolled in Company H, 76th Regiment of the Missouri Militia in November 20,1862 at Greenfield, Missouri. He was relieved of duty because of sickness, then he enlisted again in with the 15th Regiment of the Missouri Calvary to serve 20 months and was discharged July 1, 1865.
He received a veterans pension because of severe arthritis some time after 1890. After his death in 1910, his wife Artimsey received a widow's pension until her death in 1912.
