Maggie Lee (Margie) Piland Melton went to be with our Lord on September 4, 2009, at the age of 92.
Maggie was born to George & Bessie (Henshaw) Piland on November 3, 1916, in Haskell, Texas, where she spent her childhood. She graduated from Haskell High School and later met the love of her life, Ed Mickey Melton. They married on December 21, 1944, in Yuma, Arizona, while Ed was serving our country in the 90th Division during World War II. Upon Ed's return, they settled in Roby, Texas, where they owned a business and started their family. In 1960, Maggie and Ed moved to Russell Ave. in Abilene and resided there the rest of their lives. Maggie started her career as a sales clerk for G.C. Murphy Company in 1962 as a charter employee. She was distinguished multiple times as a top salesperson for her sales achievements during her 15 year career that ended when the store closed. Upon her retirement, Maggie enjoyed cooking big family dinners, traveling to the mountains, visiting with friends, and just "being with her family".
Maggie was preceded in death by her husband Ed, infant son, Eddie Mike and her parents George and Bessie Piland.
She is survived by her two daughters, Jeanette Ligon Marak of Abilene and Toni Melton McNabb of Cedar Park, three grandchildren Molly Page Lively and husband Mark, Buie Edward Ligon and wife Shea, and James (Jay) McNabb and wife Laura, and three great-grand children. She is also survived by one brother Otis Piland of Abilene and one sister, May Belle Benton of Haskell.
Services will be held Sunday, September 6th, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home at 542 Hickory in Abilene at 2:00 PM. Officiating will be Pastor Rodney Watson of Lytle South Baptist Church where Maggie was a member. Graveside services to follow at Willow Cemetery in Haskell.
