US Congressman. He was elected as a Republican to the Ninth and Tenth Congresses, representing New Jersey's 1st District and as an At-Large delegate, and served from 1805 until his death. Darby was born in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, where he was active as a farmer while holding various local offices, including Justice of the Peace (1800 to 1804). From 1802 to 1804 he was a member of the State House of Assembly. His career in the US House was hampered by tuberculosis, the cause of his death at 39. Darby was the second US Congressman to be buried at Congressional Cemetery, Uriah Tracy having been interred there just six months earlier. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
