"Gone But Not Forgotten"

CAROLINE VIRGINIA JOHNSON JARRATT WAS BORN EITHER IN 1823 AS THE GRAVESTONE INDICATES OR IN 1833 AS ALL FOUR CENSUSES INDICATED. HER PARENTS HAVE NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED YET. CAROLYN V. JOHNSON AND JAMES A. JARRATT WERE MARRIED 29 DECEMBER 1852 IN RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TENNESSEE.

CAROLINE LOVED ATTENDING CHURCH SERVICES IN ONE OF THE TWO PROTESTANT CHURCHES IN THE AREA. SOMETIMES CHURCH CAMP-MEETINGS WERE HELD. LOCAL CHURCHMEN WOULD ERECT A SHELTER CALLED A "BRUSH-ARBOR". POLES WERE PUT IN THE GROUND WITH CROSS SUPPORTS FOR THE ROOF. THEN SMALL BRANCHES COVERED IT WITH THE ATTENDEES BRINGING BENCHES AND BOXES TO SIT UPON. EVERYONE BROUGHT SOMETHING FOR DINNER AFTER THE SUNDAY SERVICE AND ATE TOGETHER ON THE GROUND. ALL CAME FOR MILES AROUND.

CAROLINE LOVED TO SIT ON HER FRONT PORCH AND SING HYMNS AFTER HER REGULAR CHURCH SERVICE. HER SON BEN JARRATT PLAYED HIS VIOLIN AT THESE FAMILY SING-A-LONGS. ONE OF CAROLINE'S FAVORITE HYMNS WAS "THERE'S A FOUNTAIN FILLED WITH BLOOD" BY WILLIAM COWPER (1731-1800).

THERE WERE A COUPLE OF SURVIVING PHOTOS OF HER GRANDCHILDREN ALSO ENJOYING HER FRONT PORCH. CAROLYN DELIVERED MOST OF HER GRANDCHILDREN. CAROLINE REMEMBERED THE STORIES TOLD HER ABOUT REVEREND DEVEREUX JARRATT, THE DISTANT RELATIVE FROM VIRGINIA. HER GRANDSON JOHN L. JARRATT,SR., REMEMBERED HIS GRANDMOTHER CAROLINE JARRATT TELLING THEM THAT OL' DEVEREUX WILL TURN OVER IN HIS GRAVE IF HE KNEW THEY WERE BEHAVING BADLY.

THANKS GOES TO BENJAMIN FRANKLIN JARRATT, JR. AND JANE E. PRUETT JARRATT, MY GRANDMOTHER, FOR THE INFORMATION. I HOPE YOUR GRANDCHILDREN ARE ENCOURAGED BY THE GRIT OF THESE OLD-TIMERS. NAN JARRATT ROYALL `# 47338206
