Son of James Egerton and Phoebe (Lowe) Smoot. During the War Between the States he served for one year in the ranks of Company A, 17th Regiment of Virginia Infantry, and then with Company H, 4th Virginia Cavalry. He was with the Black Horse on the trip around McClellan. He fought for Stonewall. Wounded several times, he was paroled at Winchester in May of 65, then went home to Alexandria.
On April 24, 1866, he married Elizabeth Edmonds, daughter of John H. and Elizabeth (Edmonds) Parrott.

1. Elizabeth Smoot married a Fuller.
His wife died August 30, 1869, and on October 15, 1873, he married Elizabeth Carter, daughter of the Rev. William and Marietta McQuire.
