Son of John Bartholomew and his cousin Harriett Jane (Downman) Downman. Attended University of Virginia 1854-1855; married Isabella Harrison Hamilton, daughter of Dr. Hugh Hamilton and Janet Hall Scott, on 12/1/1859. Father of John Bartholomew (infant death), Hugh Hamilton, Joseph Yates, William Samuel Scott, and George Stanton.

Company H "Black Horse Cavalry", 4th Virginia Cavalry, Mumford's Brigade, Fitzhugh Lee's Division, Cavalry, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Layton's Store, Upperville, Fauquier County, VA.; farmer.
Enlisted on 4/25/1861, he was mustered into "H" Co. "Black Horse Cavalry", VA 4th Cavalry as a Private.
Intra Regimental Company Transfer from company H to company F (date not given.)
Intra Regimental Company Transfer from company F to company G (date not given.)
Promoted to Ordnance Sergt 11/1862.
Promoted to Ordnance Sergt 9/19/1863, Acting 2nd Lieut, Ordnance Officer, for Wickham's Brigade.
Promoted 10/23/1864 to Lieut., Ordnance Officer, for Munford's Brigade.

Postwar, after returning to Upperville, Fauquier County, VA., he was a teacher.

The 4th Cavalry Regiment, "Escorts to Gen. Stonewall Jackson", completed its organization at Sangster's Cross Roads, Prince William County, Virginia, in September, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Prince William, Chesterfield, Madison, Culpeper, Powhatan, Goochland, Hanover, Fauquier, Buckingham, and the City of Richmond.
It participated in the Battle of Williamsburg, the Seven Days' Battles, 2nd Manassas, Maryland campaigns, Fredericksburg, Kelly's Ford, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Upperville, Gettysburg, Bristoe, Mine Run, The Wilderness, Todd's Tavern, Spotsylvania, Haw's Shop, Bethesda Church, the Shenandoah Valley with Early and around Appomattox. (bio by: BigFrench)
