Saskatoon
Saskatchewan, Canada
Death: May 13, 2011
Minneapolis
Hennepin County
Minnesota, USA

Professional Hockey Player. Nicknamed "The Boogeyman" and "The Mountie", Boogaard played for the Minnesota Wild and the New York Rangers during his National Hockey League career. A Left Wing, he played Canadian junior hockey before being drafted by the Minnesota Wild. After time in the minor leagues, he earned a roster spot with the Wild for the 2005-2006 season and developed a reputation as an enforcer, with a 2007 survey of NHL players indicating that he was the second most intimidating player in the league. In 2010 Boogaard joined the Rangers as a free agent, and he played in 22 games for them during the 2010-2011 season. In addition to playing in the NHL, Boogaard and several of his family members who are also active in hockey operated the Aaron Boogaard Fighting Camp for aspiring players. Critics argued that the camp denigrated hockey by teaching fighting, while the Boogaards claimed they were instructing young players how to defend themselves in on-ice altercations. Boogaard was found dead in his apartment by family members shortly after the end of the 2010-2011 season. (bio by: Bill McKern)
