He was a veteran of the Civil War, serving as a Pvt., in Co. D, 18th PA Cav. He was wounded at Cedar Creek, VA, on 19 Oct 1864. As a result he had his right leg amputated and died from a subsequent blood infection. (per Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Cards, 1777-1999)

He was the son of David M. and Grizella (Hickernell) Adams.
