Gustave Engvall
Birth: Jun. 12, 1863
Oslo fylke, Norway
Death: Sep. 29, 1944
Waterbury
New Haven County
Connecticut, USA

Gustave was husband of Martha (Johnson) Engvall and father of their nine children:

Sarah (1887 - 1952)
John (1889 - 1955)
George (1892 - 1903)
Victor (1895 - 1971)
Lillian (1896 - 1982)
Edna (1899 - 1936)
Helen (1904 - 1979)
Leslie (1906 - 1990)
Ona (1912 - 1960)

Three were born in Hjerpen, Jamtland, Sweden and six were born in Waterbury, Conn.

Gustave sailed to America on The Peruvian, under British Flag, out of Glasgow, Scotland and arrived at Ellis Island, New York, on 20 May 1893.

Seven months later his wife Martha Johnson Engvall arrived at Ellis Island, New York, on 15 Dec. 1893 with their 6 year old daughter Signe, 4 year old son Oskar and their infant son George aboard The Teutonic, under British Flag, from Liverpool, England.

The Teutonic was a steamship built in 1889. She was 582' long by 57' wide, 9686 gross tons, single screw, carried 1490 passengers and had a service speed of 20 knots (23 mph).

The Peruvian, built in 1863, was an older and smaller ship. She was 312' long by 39' wide, 2549 gross tons, single screw, and had inverted engines with a service speed of 11 knots (12.5 mph). Passenger capacity unknown but probably less than 50.

Assuming decent weather and no engine failure, the Peruvian should have made the crossing in 10 to 11 days and the Teutonic should have made the crossing in 6 to 7 days.

***In 1893 S. Grover Cleveland was President of the United States.***

***On the United States Federal Census of 1920, only two Engvalls show; Gustave and his son John.***

***On the United States Federal Census of 1930, only four Engvalls show; John Oscar, his wife Elizabeth, and their two daughters, Dorothea and Justine.***

Grandpa was 81 years old.

Rest Together With Grandma Martha Forever In Heavenly Peace Dear Grandpa. Thanks For Coming To America.
