Henderson Bush Young, a former educator with the Mobile County Public School System, died Sunday at an area hospital. He was 78.

Young, a native of Putnam and a longtime resident of Mobile, retired from the school system in 1982 after 31 years. He began his career as a teacher and later became assistant principal of Murphy High School. He later served as principal of Prichard Middle School, Alba High School, Theodore High School and Davidson High School.

He was a president of the Mobile County Education Association and the Mobile County Retired Teachers Association.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Mobile. Other memberships included the Dauphin Island Park and Beach Board, Phi Delta Kappa honorary service fraternity for educators and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Nita Young of Mobile; two children, Lisa Young of Mobile and Eric Young of Tuscaloosa; and two grandchildren.

The funeral is set for 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church of Mobile. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery. Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street is handling arrangements.
