Died 12 June 1917 in fall from a train. According to the Marengo Beacon (Illinois) newspaper dated 21 June 1917, Thursday, Page 8: "Sailor Killed near Harvard. Wm. E Chitwood, a sailor from the Great Lakes naval training station was found dead at the bottom of an embankment along the right of way of the North Western railway between Harvard and Sharon Tuesday forenoon of last week. The young man was killed in attempting to reach the home of a sister at Minneapolis, without railroad ticket or money, having been summoned to his sister's home by the critical illness of the latter's child. The dead man was identified by papers found on the body. The remains were shipped to Topeka, Kan., where the mother of the young man resides."
