Professional football player. Steve Furness was born in Warwick Rhode Island on December 5, 1950. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, he was drafted in the fifth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1972 as a defensive end. He mostly was a backup, but had a reputation as a reliable and hard working player. He remained with the Steelers until 1980 when he was traded to the Detroit Lions. After one season with the Lions, Steve retired. In 1991, he was hired by the Indianapolis Colts as a defensive line coach. The following year, he was hired by Bill Cowher for the same position for the Steelers. He remained in that position for two years. Off the field, Steve was known for the work he did with children. During and after his football career, he gave of his time to the Mel Blount Youth Home, the United Way, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
