John was a crewman on the U.S.S. Argonaut submarine when she sunk off the coast of Rabaul, East New Britian, Papua New Guinea on January 10, 1943. John was officially declared dead with the rest of his crew on January 11, 1944. His body was never recovered. A memorial headstone in his honor has been erected in Manila, Philippines.
