Stamford - Don Edward Newquist, 61, of Houston, formerly of Washington, D.C., died Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Monday, October 18, 2004 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Ericksdahl, with Pastor James "Pete" Weist officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home in Stamford.
Born on August 23, 1943, Don was the son of the late Edward and Inez Chestnut Newquist. He was a graduate of the Class of 1961 of Stamford High School. He was a 1966 McMurry University graduate, receiving a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He attended graduate school at Texas Tech University. He served as an officer in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1969, including an in-country tour of duty in Vietnam on the staff of the Commander, Seventh Fleet.
Newquist was a Commissioner and former Chairman at the United States International Trade Commission (ITC), nominated by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He was designated Chairman by President George H. Bush, and served as Chairman from 1991 - 1994. Don served a nine year term on the ITC, ending in 1998.
Prior to his appointment, Newquist served as Senior Vice President of Valero Energy Corporation in San Antonio, Texas. He joined Valero in 1974 as an Assistant Vice President. In 1980 he was elected a vice president of the company and an officer and director of major subsidiary companies. Newquist served as general manager of the Chamber of Commerce in Denver, Colorado from 1972 to 1974. From 1969 to 1972 he served as assistant general manager for the Chamber of Commerce in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was past president of the South Texas Chamber of Commerce.
At the time of his death, Don was on the faculty of the George Bush School of Government and Public Service and the Center for International Business Studies at Texas A & M University, College Station as a Distinguished Visiting Lecturer.
Don is survived by cousins, Carl G. Merrell of Phoenix, Arizona, and Whit Manske of California.

Andy Travers of Washington, D.C., Jeffrey Owens of San Antonio, John Z. Heinzerling and Ciro Flores, both of Washington, D.C., Stephen and Virginia Haterius of Washington, D.C. Harriett Reynolds and Pam Karter of Houston.
The family will receive visitors Sunday, October 17, 2004, from 4 to 5 PM at the funeral home.

Don was a great person - I worked for him at Coastal. His love for politics was apparent. He is missed.
