LEONA SCHLOTFELDT KRUSE..Daughter of THEODORE DETLEF and ALVINA RASCHE SCHLOTFELDT of Gambril, Iowa. Leona was a twin, whose sister Lillie died at about 2 years.
Growing up in rural Iowa, near McCausland, most of the Schlotfeldt and Rasche families lived within 20 miles in DeWitt, Clinton, McCausland, Princeton and Davenport. She took an early interest in photography and her snapshots, with names and years, are what gives descendants of Hans Henry Schlotfeldt a view of the descendants from the 1920s and 30s. Leone acquired her Teaching Certificate and, along with sister Adelia (Dayle), she taught at the one room schools near their home in Gambril, north of Eldridge.
As time went by she met John Kruse of DeWitt who served in the same unit in WW1 as her brother 'Ottie". John was a deputy in DeWitt and something of a 'daredevil' who took great joy in flying his own open cockpit plane his then-nephew, Fay Schlotfeldt, recalls. Although later divorced, Leone and John drove to many of the family homes in Iowa and instilled the love of driving and travel in her.
She was a beloved teacher to the many children in the DeWitt schools also. When not teaching, Leone had a beauty shop in her DeWitt home until about 10 years before her death.
It was Leone who made sure the old homestead where her mother, Alvina, lived until her death was maintained and secure. it was she who helped her sister-in-law, Selma become interested in starting a beauty shop business after Leone's brother Ernest died in the midst of the depression with a 3 1/2 year old son.
Beloved by all that knew her and firm in her opinions, it was she who kept the family links together.
