1st Sergeant John Middleton enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Private in 1862, in Captain 0. C. Hopkins' Company 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion. He transferred to Company K of the 5th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry in March 1863. After First Sgt. Walker transferred to the Liberty Independent Troop, Company G 5th Georgia Cavalry. Private Middleton was elected First Sergeant of the Company K and served as such for the remainder of the war. He was with the company at the time of surrender and was paroled at Bentonville, North Carolina.
John married his 1st cousin Elizabeth Celia Middleton, the daughter of his Uncle William M Middleton. She is interred in Middleton Memorial Cemetery.
In the 1870 census, John is not living with his wife and kids, but is living in his brother Robert's home.
At the time of the 1910 census, 82 year-old John was living with his daughter Myra M. Middleton Terrell and her husband Aaron C. Terrell in militia district 1514 of McIntosh County.
NOTE: It is not conclusive that John Middleton is buried in the Robert Middleton cemetery, but he is definitely NOT buried alongside his wife at Middleton Memorial. Given the apparent separation or divorce from Celia, and the closeness with his brother, and given the high number of unmarked and poorly marked graves here in the RM Cemetery, I have chosen to create a memorial for John here. Perhaps a future cemetery cleanup at RM will locate John's grave.
