Luther was the son of John Thomas Bridges and his wife Nancy Ada Stricklin Bridges. Luther worked at Kingston, West Virginia for the Kingston Pocahontas Coal Company. At age 35 he was struck by a motor in the mine and died soon after in hospital. He left a young widow and six small children.
