William "Edgar" York is the son of Joel Barney York and his wife Octavia Johanna Gresham York. Edgar's records census records state that he was born in Alabama. His older brother Jesse and older sister Lillian are stated to be born in Georgia. Joel and Octavia Johanna are living in Rockmart, Polk County Georgia in 1880 and in 1900 they are living near Bremen, Cullman County, Alabama. So although Edgar's birth place is not identified we believe he was born in Alabama. Before 1905 William Edgar York married Sarah Bette Godfrey of Bryan in Walker County, Alabama. Sarah Bette is the daughter of Monroe Godfrey and his wife Emily or Emly Williams Godfrey. William named his first child Lillian which must have been for his older sister Lillian Frances.
