Raymond A. Flank, 78, of Cook, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Friday, January 14, 2011, at Essentia Health (St. Mary's Medical Center) in Duluth, with his family at his side.

He was born on September 11, 1932 at Cook; the son of Arthur and Bessie (Urdahl) Flank. Ray grew up in Bear River and graduated from Alango High School in 1951. After graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in Germany and France during the Korean Conflict. After his tour of duty, he returned to the area and was united in marriage to Jeanette "Jeanne" A. Arnebeck at Bear River Lutheran Church on August 6, 1955. They settled in Bear River, where they resided until moving to Cook in 1967. From 1955 to 1966 he took over his father's school bus drivers route. Ray enjoyed his route that took students to the Bear River, Alango and Cook schools. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and in maintenance for Reserve Mining in Babbitt from 1966 to 1982. After Reserve's closing in 1982, he was employed with St. Louis County, where he also was a heavy equipment operator and in maintenance until his retirement in 1997. Raymond's driving passion was farming. He also loved gardening and enjoyed tinkering and fixing along with deer hunting and fishing. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook, the Orr American Legion Post #480, had served on the city of Cook Utility Commission and was a member of the NRA. Later, Raymond and Jeanne traveled extensively in the United States, Caribbean and Europe. Their special destination was Colorado Springs, Colorado, to see their son Ross and his family. Ray had a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 2 sisters, Lois Johnson and Sharon Kallio.

Raymond is survived by his wife, 2 sons, 2 daughters, a sister, 7 Grandchildren, 2 step-granddaughters, 1 step-great granddaughter, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Friday (January 21st) at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook. Rev. Dennis Morriem will be the officiant. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Casket bearers will be Raymond's grandchildren. Spring interment will be in the Bear River Cemetery.
