NEWBERRY, Mich. - Howard Allen Carpenter passed away peacefully at his home in Seney on Saturday May 26, 2012 at the age of 92.

Born February 13, 1920 in Dollarville, son of the late George E. and Viola D. (Johnson) Carpenter, he attended school in Newberry. He learned his lifelong work ethic when he began working at an early age. As a teenager, Howard was assigned to work at the C.C.C. camp in Germfask.

In December of 1942, he joined the United States Army to serve his country and became a member of the 82nd Airborne, 325th Glider Infantry serving in the European Theater until his honorable discharge in December 1945. Citations that he received included the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart of Valor.

While stationed in Europe, he met and married the love of his life, the former Phyllis Irene Perkins from Leicester, England on August 23, 1945. She joined him in Newberry at the end of the war and they enjoyed 66 happy years together.

In the early 1950s, they moved to Seney for work and settled there, raising a son and three daughters. He was an active member of the Germfask United Methodist Church.

Howard was well known, loved, respected and admired by his friends and colleagues for his dedication to the Masonic Fraternity. He first joined the Masonic Lodge in Grand Marais and then transferred to the McMillan Lodge #400 F & A.M. in Newberry. He served them faithfully holding the office of Worshipful Master many times and also served in many other offices. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite of Marquette, Royal Arch Masons of St. Ignace and was a very active member of the Order of Eastern Star Luce Chapter #364 whom he also served as Worthy Patron "too many times to count". He was selected as Mason of the Year for the State of Michigan in 1992, received the Meritorious Service Award and, in 1993, was chosen to receive the 33rd degree of Masonry in Boston, MA.

In addition to his parents, Howard is preceded in death by his siblings Edward, Roger, Ruby Owen, Charlotte Drake and Jennie Carlson.

Survivors include his loving wife, Phyllis, of Seney; children Paul (Barbara) of Newberry, Marlene (Stephan) Walden of Marquette, Janice Bonifield and Candice (George) Davis all of Seney; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sister Ruth Dake of Newberry; several nieces and nephews.
