Hugh Babbitt, son of Stephen and Malinda Babbitt, was born at St. Augustine, Illinois.
Hugh was a farmer in Fulton County, Illinois, when he enlisted as a Private in the service of his country on 25 March 1865 at the age of 21 years. He mustered in Co H 23 Illinois Infantry Consolidated at Chicago, Illinois, on 28 Mar 1865. He mustered out on 24 Jul 1865 at Richmond, Virginia.
Hugh and his twin brother, Jonathan J Babbitt, served together throughout the war in the same company.
On 11 Feb 1872 in Fulton County, Illinois, he was united in marriage to Azubia Babbitt, daughter of James and Mary A Babbitt, who preceded him in death on 27 Apr 1913. Ten children were born to Hugh and Azubia.
After their marriage they made their home at St. Augustine, Illinois, for three years, and came to Iowa in 1875, living northwest of Malvern.
Hugh joined the Christian church when a young man and remained a faithful member as long as his health permitted.
Hugh had been in poor health a year before his death but was always active. He passed away at his home near Malvern, Iowa, on 16 Jan 1928 at the age of 83 years 4 months 29 days.
