Born at Bolton, England to Arthur Atherton and Nancy Arwood. Convert to Mormonism and was a passenger on the Mormon emigrant ship Brooklyn bound for California. Later was a pressman at the "Oakland Transcript". He was living in Stockton, California in 1868.
"War Vet" is inscribed on his tomb.
Daily Alta California (San Francisco, California), November 14, 1888 "William Atherton, aged seventy-six years, a Mexican war veteran and a California pioneer, had an attack of apoplexy on the street several days ago. He fell to the ground. Yesterday while walking along Eleventh street, near Webster, he had another and a fatal stroke. Deceased resided with C. M. Bonnemort, his employer, at Ninth and Jackson streets. His daughter lives in Washington Territory. He had no other known relative."

1870 Sacramento: John Atherton 55 born England, Agnes 45 born Scotland, Arabella Atherton 14 born CA (this appears to be William Atherton with a 2nd wife).
1880 Oakland: William Atherton widower age 65.
Emily and William Atherton were on the ship "Brooklyn" that left NY for SF 4/6/1846 with the ship chartered by Samuel Brannan of the Mormon Church to carry 238 of the members. They landed in Yurba Buena 7/31/1846
