Member of Parliment for Denbighshire, 1536 to 1547. Also served as Governor of Denbigh Castle during the reigns of Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth I. He and his wife, Jane Dryhurst, ultimately had 16 children; nine sons and seven daughters.

One of Richards sons, Sir Hugh Middleton, was responsible for building the system that still supplies London with its water today.
