He was born in Bristol, Virginia in 1844, the son of Henry and Eliza Barger Leonard and with the advent of the Civil War, he took up the cause of the South. In all probability he took part in the battle of Gettysberg. He served well and was honorably discharged at the close of the war.

He married Jeanetta Ross around 1869 in Bristol, VA and 8 children were born to this union. Two of the children, Emma Dora and James Edward preceded him him death. The others who survived him were Nannie May Gibson, Pearl Bell Knowles, Delia Gurtrude Bateman, Walter Leonard, Sallie Myrtle Fehrenbacher, and Grover Leonard.
