Git Ander K-9 Officer
Birth: unknown
Death: Sep. 26, 2001

Police K9 "Git Ander", a 7 years old German Shepherd, who searched for victims of the September 11th tragedy, was shot in the line of duty just a few weeks after his return from Ground Zero. While holding a female suspect until his handler, Sgt. Gilespie returned, other officers arriving on the scene thought Git was a stray dog attacking someone. When the officers were unsuccessful in separating Git from his quarry without his handler present, they shot him fatally 11 times despite the K9 badge on his collar. Sgt. John Gillespie arrived just as his dog was dying.

According to Union County Sheriff Ralph Froehlich, the police dog performed exactly as he had been trained in subduing the suspect. Sheriff Froehlich explains that Git Ander turned on one of the clueless officers for trying to separate the dog from the girl—a command that can only be given by his partner, Sgt. Gillespie.

No charges were filed against the two officers who killed Git Ander.

A monument was unveiled on September 30 of 2006 for Union County k-9 deputies. The sculpture of a dog especially in honor of K-9 Officer Git has these words inscripted:

SEPTEMBER 26, 2001
