John Barelow Lane was born 1 Oct 1844 in Tamaroa, Perry County, Illinois, to Elijah and Elizabeth (Wells) Lane. John lived in the Perry County area until he joined the Missouri Volunteer Militia on March 11, 1862. He later mustered out and mustered in to the 14th Missouri Volunteer Calvary. He changed his middle name to Daniel according to his papers. He mustered out on 17 Nov 1865 from Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas, and was allowed to keep his pistol, saber and accouterments. He married Suphronia Eliza Kirby on 6 Sep 1870 at the Camp Ground, Uniontown, Bourbon County, Kansas. While John was away at war, his family moved the South West Missouri. They are listed in the 1870 census at Shoal Creek, Newton County, Missouri. John may have owned a Mill which was destroyed by a boiler explosion in 1879 that killed two workers. John and Suphronia had four babies that all died young between 1870 and 1880. Little Kearney Lane is buried next to his Great Grandfather, Thomas Wells east of Joplin Missouri. The other three babies' burial places have not been found. John died 16 Aug 1889. According to his daughter, my great grandmother, he worked for a lumber mill owned by a Carter. She said he rode away one day and when he came back put his affairs in order and died two weeks later. He apparantly had gone to a doctor who told him if he had come 6 months sooner, he could have helped him. My Mother, his Great Granddaughter, said she remembers her grandmother saying something about kidney disease, but we have nothing to verify that. He served his country and then did all he could to provide for his family. Unfortunately we have yet to find where he is buried.
