Inscription:
James "Jim" McCampbell Atchley served as a corporal with Co. H, 3rd Tennessee Cavalry (Union). He was captured Sept. 24, 1864 at Sulphur Branch Trestle, AL and held at Camp Morgan prison camp at Cahaba, AL. Released in April 1865, he was sent to a parole camp near Vicksburg, MS. On April 24, 1865 he, along with about 2,000 other recently paroled Union prisoners-of-war, was placed aboard the sidewheel steamboat Sultana for shipment north. At 2:00 AM on April 27, 1865, when the Sultana was 7 miles north of Memphis, TN, the boilers exploded. Over 1,500 people were killed. Fortunately, James Atchley survived.
