Pierre Gerardy
Birth: Dec. 1, 1792
Waldwisse, France
Death: Jul. 24, 1860
Doniphan County
Kansas, USA

Abridged from the book "The Pierre Gerardy Family in America" by Evelyn Potter Park, 1979:

Pierre was said to have been well-educated and to have been a medical doctor in the French National Guard. He was also said to have been superintendent of a large estate and to have been the burgermeister (mayor) of the village where they lived. He married Marguerite Nicolas, a widow, and their first child Pierre (later "Peter") was born in April 25, 1831, at Waldwisse, Moselle Department, Lorraine, France. Pierre was 38 and Marguerite was 34. Gabriel Nicolas Gerardy was born Sept. 21, 1832. The family then moved to Hestroff, in the canton of Bouzonville, where their third son Jean (later "John") was born on May 3, 1840.

Living so near the French-German border, they learned to speak both French and German fluently. This area of France was frequently a battleground between the two countries. Not being in sympathy with the political group then in power and with another war between France and Germany clearly possible, the family chose in 1854 to seek freedom in a new land . Pierre was 61 and Marguerite was at least 57. Probably they were more concerned about the future of their sons than their own.

They landed in New Orleans the 29th of March, 1854, and proceeded upriver to Hannibal Missouri. Pierre reached St. Joseph, Missouri, and on April 10, 1855 he applied for citizenship under the name Peter Gerardy. His wife Marguerite died in or near St. Joseph on September 25, 1855. The location of her grave is unknown. Pierre and his three sons crossed the river to Kansas and established a farm in Doniphan County, Kansas, near the village of Geary. He passed on some of his medical training to his eldest son, Peter, who was much in demand by his pioneer neighbors for help with the sick and injured.

Pierre died July 24, 1860, near what was then the village of Geary, and was buried in Rosedale Cemetery. He is said to be buried on the east side of the cemetery though no tombstone now marks his burial place.
