Lorentz was the son of Johann Jacob Holbein and Catharina Weiss. He married Eva Catharina Kramlich.

Lorentz Holben was a farmer in Weisenberg, PA, and owned a tract of 140 acres, including the homestead. In 1777, he was a member of Capt. Marburger's company of the 3rd Battalion of Northampton Co., Militia, commanded by Colonel Michael Bobst. In 1780 and 1782, he and Jacob were on rolls of the 6th Battalion under Lt. Col. Henry Geiger. The gun used by him in the Revolution is in the possession of the family, owned by Dr. F.J. Holben. His three brothers were also members of this company.

Interviewed for a pension in his home in January of 1833, at the age of 83, he said: "...1774, drafted and mustered under command of Capt. William Mayer, attached to Regiment commanded by Col. Nicholas Kern and was marched from said Twp. of Weisenberg through county of Northhampton [now Leghigh] to Germantown, the British being at the city of Philadelphia, and were marching from place to place in that neabourhood..." in 1778 - " what was called Whoyiming country through northern parts of Northhampton Co. in county of Luzerne against Indians at which time earned a rifel as Private militiaman." 1780 - "...marched behind Blue Mts. in Northampton Co. and were stationed from the R. Lehigh along the Mahanoy Creek...for the protection of the inhabitants in that neabourhood against the savage Indians..." Received $20 per year as pension till he died at age 93. Bequethed rifle to oldest son of son Soloman (Soloman). Solomon was still on the old homestead in 1876. (Source: "Gleanings, a History of the Holben and Rettinger Ancesters of Twide R. He was a member of the Reformed Congregation at Weisenberg Church. Lorentz and his wife Eva Catharine were the parents of:
