George Gentry Murphy was the son of Lonnie Lee Murphy and his wife, Mittie V. Styron. He was born in what was then Princess Anne County, Virginia (now city of Virginia Beach). He was known to family and friends as Gentry. He was married to Mildred Pallett on September 1, 1941.

Gentry and Mildred had one son, George Gentry Murphy, Jr., who was born in April 1944. Gentry was killed in France during World War II, never having seen his new son.

Military Inscription: "116th Inf. 29th Div. US Army" and "Died in France"

*** NOTE *** A note from Gentry's niece adds the following information:
"He was survived by his wife, Mildred, son, George Gentry Jr., parents, Lonnie and Mittie Murphy, three brothers, Floyd Lee, Melvin Lonnie, Elroy Fleetwood and two sisters, Velma and Emily."
