Virgil was reared in the Lynn and Spartansburg Community and was a member of 4-H and Boy Scouts. He was a Scout Leader after he graduated from Spartansburg High School in 1956. Virgil helped his father on the farm and was very efficient in repairing machinery and, being an electrician, he wired the new home. In 1959, Virgil enrolled in Hobbarts Welding School at Troy, Ohio for three months. He received his certificate as a professional welder and was employed immediately by Jeffries Manufacturing Company, Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State University was near where Virgil roomed and enrolled for three months studying English.
Virgil enlisted in the army July 6, 1960 and took his basic training at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri. He came home on leave for fourteen days in September, 1960, and was then assigned at Fort Gordon, Georgia. During a eight week course as Private Virgil Lee Lilly, he completed the lineman's course and was trained to install and maintain aerial communication wires and cables. He left Fort Gordon, Georgia November 25, 1960 and flew to Oakland, California. On December 3, 1960, Virgil embarked for Hawaii, landing on the island of Oahu, on December 25, 1960. he was stationed at Fort Shaffter, near Honolulu for twenty-two months and was rated up to Specialist Four. Virgil died on Oahu Island, October 4, 1962, cause never being determined. His body was returned to his home town of Lynn, Indiana and was buried in Spartansburg Cemetery on May 1, 1964.
