Jesse was a 1928 graduate of Hagerstown High school, took a short course in poultry at Purdue University and became a co-partner with his parents in the chicken business. His father was a carpenter and contractor and Maurice learned the trade from him. Maurice became a very efficient carpenter and built a new stone house on his 116 acre farm which he bought in 1939. Maurice and Helen's sons continued to raise capon chickens until 1959. They would raise thirteen thousand chickens a year. There began to be no profit and they quit the business.
