5/7/1858 James S. Buckmaster was a sworn character witness in the murder trial of Joseph Downham accused of murdering Ceasar Lewis, a negro.

William Burton, elected as Delaware's 40th Governor in 1858 by defeating James S. Buckmaster by 204 votes and served from January 18, 1859 to January 20, 1863
