A.J. was an exceptional dog. She was a "Cock-a-Poo".
My first wife, Roxane and I picked her out at Traxler's Kennel in Omro after we had just moved to Oshkosh. Roxane and I adored her and pampered her from the beginning! She was so small she fit in the palm of my hand.
When she was a puppy, she was SO darn naughty! We used to leave her in the house by herself and when we came back from somewhere there was a trail of dirty clothes that ran from our bedroom, down the hallway, to the back door.
One time after we had first gotten her, I was taking her to Poy Sippi to show her to my parents. She was so small that she climbed into my front console of the car and got tangled up in wires. I remember speeding to my parents home and they weren't there. I panicked. I found my keys to their house and rushed to my dad's shop and got some tools to get her out. I had to take most of the console apart to free her. But she was OK.
She turned out to be one of Roxane's & my best friends, we took her almost everywhere with no trouble at all. She was a well traveled dog. She also trained very easy. You only had to show her how to do a trick once or twice and she knew it! She knew many tricks.
When my now ex-wife filed against me for divorce & we were in the final Court hearing, she wanted to have partial custody of her and visitation rights, which I had fought tooth and nail against, but I turned to the Judge at the hearing and asked him "would you really separate a dog from his master?", he said no, that would be dumb and refused her request. Roxane cried her eyes out after he said "no", that would be a dumb thing to do.
"A.J." loved everyone and anyone! If she could only have talked, she would have had many "tails" to tell.
She fell in love with my second wife, Julie, who treated her like her own kid. Julie & "A.J." had a lot of fun together during those years I had her together. Sometimes they had fun just chasing each other around my Dining Room table or in the back yard! My heart broke the last Sunday she was alive as she couldn't stand up at all. No vet's were available that day to see her. On Monday, Julie took her to the vet and found out she had a large tumor inside pressing and blocking her normal doggy functions. The vet said he could operate but it would only prolong her life maybe 30 days, and that even with surgery, at her age she more than likely wouldn't survive. So Julie had her put to sleep. Sadly I didn't have the guts to be with her until the very end, so Julie relieved me of that responsibility. A.J. passed away instantly, no fight, she knew it was her time, after the vet gave her the shot, while Julie held her in her arms. I cried at her passing, but I wouldn't have wanted her to keep on suffering. Keeping her alive, in agony for just my sake, just wouldn't be the right to do. I had her privately cremated.
She was my best friend for many years. Kept me company a lot after my divorce and was someone I always told all my woes and triumphs too. She was my constant companion. I still miss her, but I have a lot of great memories of her. She was a part of the family. She should be remembered that way.
She now rests in a nice Urn, on a special shelf in my home. I'm sure that not only my "ex", Roxane whom I miss too, but myself as well will never ever forget her.
Now, she's waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge along with Howie until the day comes when they see me walking their way and we are all happy again together.
Firm believer that God made dogs to help people maintain their sanity in an insane world.
God couldn't have made a better dog. She was very special. If only members of the human race could care about things and people as she did, my world wouldn't have crumbled. There's a reason I guess why when you spell dog backwards it says what it does. They are a taste of Heaven on earth & AJ was an angel. IMHO!
