She was retired from office administration with Atlantic Physical Therapy. When she lived in Brevard, North Carolina, she served as the secretary of the NC State Garden Club. She was the formal chairwoman for the Transylvania County Bicentennial Committee and was a charter member of the Ladies of the Club. She was a member and participated in the "Calico Chorus".
While in Surfside Beach, she was a member of Surfside Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and played handbells. She published a children's book called "A Special Friend" based on her childhood experiences.
Susan exemplified the old saying, "Bloom Where You're Planted".
Susan was survived by her husband; daughter Lesli Ann (Gration)& husband Peter; son David Randall Varner and wife Linda, or Portland, OR; brother William (Bill) Roberts of Winston Salem, and seven grandchildren.
Her memorial service was held at Harrison United Methodist Church in Pineville, NC with the Rev. Charles Inabinet officiating. An additional memorial service was held at Surfside United Methodist Church in Surfside Beach, SC.
