John was the son of Andrew J. and Elizabeth GOODRICH BAILEY. He was primarily a farmer, but he freighted tobacco and whisky for a while in Kentucky.

He married Susan Walker BERRY in 1862-63 in Ballard County, Kentucky (records lost in fire). He and Susan had nine children, seven born in Kentucky, one in Texas, and one in Indian Territory.

In 1860 he was in Carroll County,Tennessee; in the 1870 and 1880 censuses he was in Ballard County, Kentucky; in 1900 he was in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory; in 1910 he was in Carter County, Oklahoma, with J. H. Gardner, one of his sons-in-law. He was dearly loved by at least one of his granddaughters.

His obituary in the Daily Ardmoreite for Monday, Oct. 15, 1934, reads as follows:

TRIBUTE PAID - J. W. BAILEY
Impressive Funeral Services Are Conducted, Emmanuel Baptist Church
Funeral services were conducted at Emmanuel Baptist Church Monday afternoon at 3:30 for J.W. Bailey, 91, who died suddenly Sunday afternoon at the home of his daughter Mrs. V. C. Newman, 433 C Southeast. The services were conducted by Rev. W. F. Stansbury, pastor, and burial, with Harvey Bros. funeral home in charge of arrangements, in Rose Hill.
Surviving are one son, Edgar Bailey, Holdenville, and three daughters, Mrs. M. D. Lanier, Ada; Mrs. John Gardner, Madill; and Mrs. V. C. Newman. He had made his home with Mrs. Gardner for several years. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive also.
Bailey was born in Tennessee, Nov. 24, 1842, and would have been 92 years old next month. He had been a Baptist for 70 years and a member of the Masonic order for 62 years.
Bearers of the body will include Dave Framer, Louis Stouder, Wilson Newman, J. A. Gilliam, Clint Dove, and Stanley Hornbeck.
