John was the oldest son born to Samuel H. and Nancy (Clutter) Perigo, natives of Kentucky and Indiana, respectively. On January 28, 1864, he enlisted in Company E, One Hundred and Twentieth Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, serving until the close of the war. He returned home and on February 10, 1867, married Sarah I. Rhoads.
