Baseball player and coach. He began his baseball career in 1936 as a pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League. He pitched professionally in six decades, including throwing a perfect inning with a Triple-A team in 1980 at the age of 63 thus becoming the oldest player to do so in professional baseball history. He was the pitching coach for the 1982 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. Besides coaching with the Cardinals from 1981-83, he also coached for the Houston Astros from 1971-75. For the last five seasons he was the special assignment pitching coach for the Seattle Mariners. He was inducted into the Washington Sports Hall of Fame.
