Death: Feb. 14, 1884

Alphonso Dwelle married Betsey Tefft in 1823. Both families were from Greenwich, New York. Alphonso's father and both grandfathers (Abner Dwelle and Moses Martin) fought in the Revolution. Betsey and Alphonso had a large and prosperous family of ten children, including twins, Horace and Horton.

Alphonso Dwelle was born May 3, 1800, became the owner of an extensive farm in Washington county and devoted his attention to agricultural pursuits throughout his entire life. He was a son of Abner Dwelle, a native of Massachusetts, who followed the sea and was captain of a vessel for several years. In 1792 he removed to Washington county, New York, where he secured one hundred and sixty acres of land, after which he devoted his attention to farming. He married a Miss Martin, whose people were among the earliest settlers of Washington county, and there he reared his family, passing away in the year 1829. It was upon the old homestead of his father that Alphonso Dwelle spent the last years of his life, passing away March 13, 1884, while his wife, who was born in November, 1802, departed this life in 1869. "Mr. Dwelle spent his early life in the routine of farm-labor, and attending the common school. May 2, 1824, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Tabor Tefft, who had a family of thirteen children. The result of this union was ten children, Lemuel, born Aug. 16, 1824; subsequently married to Hattie Edwards, of Wisconsin. He has been chosen State Senator one term, and member of the State Legislature one term. James Albert, born March 16, 1826 ; married, in 1859, to Sarah Walker, of Salem. Occupation, real-estate dealer and money-lender. Henry B., born July 13, 1827. Practicing medicine in St. Louis. Caroline, born June 8, 1829 ; widow of late B. T. White. Mary Elizabeth, born Nov. 16, 1830; died April 29, 1870. Horace and Horton, born Dec. 25, 1832 ; the latter died June 7, 1868. Lydia, born Jan. 19, 1835 ; married to J. E. Mr. Dwelle has held various offices of trust in his town, and is today enjoying the confidence of all who know him. He is a man of correct moral habits and strict integrity of purpose in all his business transactions. Mr. Dwelle has been a Republican since the party's formation, prior to which he was a Whig ; his first vote was cast for De Witt Clinton, and he has never failed to attend a presidential or township election since. He was formerly an anti-Mason, but latterly more favorable to the organization. Mr. and Mrs. Dwelle were identified with the Baptist church, and have always contributed liberally to the support of school interests."
