Birth: Jun. 13, 1778, England
Death: Nov. 20, 1848
Saratoga County
New York, USA

William Henry Dodd was born in England in 1778. His father also named William Dodd was a well to do shop keeper in London. William the son, was educated at Oxford University in Architecture.

Interesting information was found at the Saratoga County Historian's Office in the Dodd file written in 1932. This story stated that William Henry Dodd was disowned by his family for marrying a woman of low birth from the country. Story is that William fell in love with Mary Hudson when she visited his father's shop to trade. William thought Mary was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. So they married and immigrated to America in 1806. And it is said he never spoke of his family again. He supposedly brought a large sum of money, $10,000, with which to relocate.

Dodd was one of the first settlers in Waterford, NY in 1806. He was the engineer of the Waterford-Troy bridge across the Hudson River, which was said to be an impressive feat. He later moved to Wilburs Basin where he built a three story house on a hill. He home schooled his children and was known in the valley as a "highly educated very bright eccentric old Englishman". He apparently chose not to work after moving to his grand home.

William Henry Dodd (1778-1848) and Mary Hudson (1783-1858), had 12 children:
William Henry Dodd 1807 1890
Mary Dodd McCoduck 1809 1882
Ann Dodd Cronk 1810 1854
Maria Dodd Simmons 1812 1865
Charles Dodd 1814 1864
Charlotte Dodd Aldrich 1814 1866
Edward Dodd 1816 1891
Henry Dodd 1818 1880
Frederick Dodd 1820 1889
Sophia Dodd 1822 1822
Sophia Dodd Van Norder 1825 1892
Martha Dodd Van Norder 1829 1852

The pictured watch fob belonged to William Henry Dodd. The three sides show his initials, the ship he traveled to America on, and a picture of the King of England (George III?). The fob is now in the care of writer, William's 3rd Great Granddaughter.
