While his stone is in the Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery, cremation was performed, then a memorial service was held in December of that year at New Hope Church of the Brethren, Dunmore, Pocahontas County, WV (the home church of his daughter's family). Ashes were scattered by his daughter's family in Summers County, WV at Elk Knob Church Cemetery (burial place of his father), Huffman Cemetery (burial place of his mother), and near his homeplaces. This delay of six months between his death and service was due to the fact that, besides his daughter and son-in-law, his only immediate family members were his two grandsons who worked for the US Forest Service, stationed out of the Pinedale, Wyoming district office. The extreme fire season of that year meant that his grandsons could not be notified of his death for up to 4 weeks, and that they could not leave their wildfire duties until after the fire season, very late that autumn. Hence, the grandsons and one grandaughter-in-law traveled to West Virginia from Wyoming during the Christmas/New Year's holidays when other extended Dale family & friends could also come to Pocahontas County, WV.
